League of Legends is a free online strategy game developed by Riot Games. In League of Legends, players assume the role of a champion and then participate in a team based battle against other players or computer controlled bots. The game encourages team play and has an active community of over 32 million members. The game is absolutely free to play but real money can be used to purchase additional champions, skins for those champions, and runes and boosts to make your progression easier.

Everything except experience boosts and champion skins can be purchased in League of Legends by using “influence points” which are awarded at the end of each battle. It is quite possible to enjoy the highest level of play in the game indefinitely without having to spend a single dime.

There are currently two game modes in League of Legends : Dominion and Classic.

Classic League of Legends

Classic games are played out in either of two battlefields known as Summoner’s Rift and Twisted Treeline. Summoner’s Rift is used for 5 versus 5 team battle where Twisted Treeline is used for 3 versus 3 team battles. In both battlefields the objective is the same: destroy the other teams “Nexus”. In order to reach the Nexus, players much pass by turrets, waves of enemy NPC monsters known as “minions”, and of course the champions on the other team. Players must work together to overcome all of these obstacles and destroy the opposing teams Nexus.

League of Legends Dominion

In Dominion game mode, teams compete to capture and hold control points. When one team controls more control points than the other team, the opposing team’s Nexus begins to take damage. Once the enemy nexus has been reduced to 0, victory is declared. Points can also be won by completely certain objectives such as capturing a randomly selected control point which has been designated as a “quest point” or by successfully defending an already captured point. Dominion games last around 20 minutes.

League of Legends Champions
In League of Legends, players control a Champion. This Champion is a pre-built character that possesses spells and abilities that make him or her (or it) unique. Champions may not be duplicated on a team, but the opposing team is free to choose the same champions as the other team if they wish.

Champions are designed to function in specific roles. For instance Rammus is a champion who is designated as a Tank. This means that he is supposed to stay at the forefront of battle and draw enemy fire so that the rest of the team can survive long enough to defeat the other champions. Soraka, on the other hand, is a Support champions who uses her spells from afar to heal other players and give them boosts to their mana so that they can fight longer before dying or being exhaused.

Every week a dozen or so champions are made available to all players to use for free. In addition, champions can be purchased using either Influence Points which are won by participating in battles, or by using Riot Points which are purchased with real money. Once a player purchases a champion then that champion will be permanently available for them to use.
